The United States Attorney’s Office is pleased to announce another training opportunity brought to you by the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council (ATAC). On September 13, 2007, we will have a one-day event with two outstanding presenters from the Bureau of Justice Assistance/Institute for Intergovernmental Research. Dr. Bob Taylor will provide a basic understanding of middle-Eastern culture, religion, and politics as they relate to current terrorism issues. A basic introduction to Islam is provided, including a special focus on the historical and contemporary development of radical Islamic ideology. The entire presentation focuses on the impact of these groups on U.S. law enforcement. Sgt. Samer Issa returns to the district to be your “Guide to Islam & Arabic Culture.” Sgt. Issa, of the Los Angeles Police Department, will give you a very interesting and informative presentation on the five pillars of Islam, Islamic holidays, Islamic religious customs, and significant Islamic names. It explains how to use knowledge of middle-Eastern culture and customs in interviewing and interrogating, along with recognizing and understanding Middle-Eastern clothing. You will even learn some Arabic words to utilize during interviews and interrogations and for officer safety. The conference will be held at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock, located at 2 Riverfront Place. If you need overnight accommodations, we have reserved a block of rooms for the evening of September 12 at the government rate of $76.00 plus tax.
