The BAUER Principle (and No, it wasn't named after the "24" character, although he did use it.

The Bauer Principle stands for the Best Available Use of Essential Resources.
Simply put it is taking what you have and getting the most out of it. This means that your overall objectives stay the same but your intermediate objectives change depending on what time and resources you have available at the moment. Instead of thinking about a problem as linear steps to a solution, where you must accomplish one goal before you can start on the next goal, you break it down in to smaller tasks which can be accomplished and then brought in at the appropriate time to complete the larger goal.

But I didn't have my gun...

The unwritten code is you always have your weapon on you, unless your department says otherwise. The harsh reality is there are ocassions where you are not going to have a gun. The question is are you unarmed or do you just not have your gun.

Murphy's Law for Cops

murphy's law for police officers (a bit long)

New uniforms and ties attract catsup and gravy stains

Court will be scheduled in the middle of your days off.

Hot calls will only come over the air 10 minutes before the end of your shift.

You will never get the urge to use the bathroom until you have left the station.

Surprise inspections will only occur after you have been in a foot pursuit through mud.

The Mayor will get a traffic ticket the day before your department negotiates for a salary increase.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Also the harder they punch, kick and choke.

One size DOES NOT fit all

You have just been hired by a law enforcement or security agency. One of the very first things they do is issue your uniforms and your duty weapon. They want your uniforms to fit so you project a professional appearance for the public. Then they give you the same duty weapon every one else carrys. Sometimes it seems like they care more about how you look than how safely and effectively you can do your job. What's up with that?
And the arguments are, well, everyone needs to carry a standardized weapon. (Translation: the more you buy the better the price.)Sometimes there is the "We need all the knockdown power we can get". The "well, if you can't shoot the thing, you shouldn't work here and my personal favorite, "Well, we might get in a shootout and need to share ammo."
